More about this Spoon and the Hotel. Grand Hotel Vesuvius: The end of the 19th century brought with it profound changes to the town planning of Naples. The government began action to renovate the most deprived areas of Naples and to construct the sea-front from scratch. This exciting atmosphere of urban renewal also attracted a Belgian financier named Oscar du Mesnil, who was in Naples with his wife. He was so fascinated by the city that he decided to construct a hotel on the new se-front to do justice to the beauty of the site. The "Grand Hotel de Vesuve" was duly constructed in 1882. The new hotel was the height of luxury and elegance and immediately became an important stop for international tourist arriving in Naples. Two years after its inauguration, the hotel hosted Queen Victoria of Swe3den and her personal doctor, Åxel Munthe, already a writer of some repute. In 1885 Guy de Maupassant stayed at the hotel. The tradition of important guest of hotel Vesuvio continued with people like Oscar Wilde, Gabriele D' Annunzio and Enrico Caruso who called it his "Neapolitan home." The dark years of the Second War put a halt to this and finally it was destroyed during the bombardments. The hotel was painstakingly rebuilt, taking skilled craftsmen over two years. It took its present shape, and two extra floors were added. The inauguration took place on the 26th of April 1950.
Additional Note on the Prancing Horse: The "prancing horse" is a symbol for the city of Naples in Southern Italy. Between the 16th to 19th centuries, Naples and the surrounding regions were known for their high-quality Neapolitan horses. The Neapolitan Hors [Italian: (Cavallo) Napoletano, Neapolitano or Napolitano, is a horse breed that originated in the plains between Naples and Caserta, in the Campania region of Italy, but which may have been bred throughout the Kingdom of Naples. The Neapolitan horse was frequently mentioned in literature from the 16th to the 19th century and noted for its quality. Corte wrote in 1562: "in Italy the horses of the Kingdom of Naples are greatly esteemed; [there] many fine coursers are born ... suitable for use in war and in the manège and for every service that the rider may require." The famous symbol of the Ferrari race team is the Cavallino Rampante ("prancing horse") black prancing stallion on a yellow shield, usually with the letters S F (for Scuderia Ferrari), with three stripes of green, white and red (the Italian national colors) at the top.
