99-1-Durgin Sterling Souvenir spoon Knickerbocker

Hdle obv. Diedrich Knickerbocker was a non-de-plume assumed by Washington Irving in the publication of the “History of New York” and has now become the name given in jest to all old Dutchman of New Amsterdam. The “old Knickerbocker”  is frequently represented dressed in his ancient costume, seated in his chair holding aloft his tankard.

Hdle obv. On the handle of this spoon sis the half figure of a man with a log beard, long gown and a distinct headdress. He holds a “water rod” with the words “Poland Water” + ”Portland Spring” on the lower handle.
Hdle rev. On the handle reverse is the back view of the figure with a circular medallion stamped with the words: “Poland Mineral Spring Water” and the acronym “PMS” in the center of the medallion.

99-11-Durgin Sterling Souvenir spoon Miles Standish

Hdle obv. The Puritan Captain (Miles Standish) stands, as Longfellow pictures him, “clad in doublet and hose, and boots of Cordovan leather.” The sword od Damascus , curved at the point, hangs at his side. He wear the broad-brimmed hat and the belted coat, and looks into the distance with  martial air. In the background are leafless tree trunks. The remainder of the handle is formed of the Captain’s “glittering weapons of warfare,” his fowling-piece, musket & matchlock and bunches of leaves, seemingly held together by a twining ribbon of carded wool, bearing the name of Standish.

99-13-Durgin Sterling Souvenir spoon Independence Hall Philadelphia

Hdle obv. In the spoon Bailey, Banks & Biddle (maker) have produced a view of Independence Hall as it faces Chestnut Street (in the upper part of the handle at the finial). Below the building are the words “Independence Hall,” surrounded with scroll work, and below these, the word “Declaration of Independence Signed Here 1776.” Along the shank of the handle is the word, “Philadelphia,” in antique perpendicular letters.

Hdle obv. At the top of the handle is a representation of the White House, situated in the Western part of Washington. . . The details of the building are accurately reproduced in the spoon , the fountain and shrubbery being perfectly depicted. Below this, in small letters are the word “President’s House,”  and arranged perpendicularly down the remainder of the handle are the letters of the words, “Washington D.C.,” uniquely designed.

Hdle obv. This spoon show Paul Revere on his midnight ride with nothing but the rider on a galloping horse and the city of “Boston” in the distance. . . . A full moon is rising behind the hills and several buildings are visible too the left. As Revere gallops by, swinging his right arm like a beacon, a Minuteman stands in his doorway, a gun held in his right hand partly behind him.

Hdle obv. The leading features of the design consist of the fort and water-fall. The fort is represented as a circular stone citadel having vertically-slotted port-holes through the walls and arranged at or near the top end of the spoon handle.  On each side are shown flanking walls, and on the ground  beneath and in front of the fort is  shown a cannon provided with a scroll crossing the cannon.  Beneath this representation is  view of the water-fall (I.e. Minnehaha Falls) fringed by vegetation on each side, with trees and other foliage beyond, the falls extending  downward on the handle.
The top of the citadel-walls forms the end of the spoon-handle, ,and the inclosing and flanking walls and the ends of the scroll form the ends of the handled near the end. The edges of the handle from the scroll to the bowl of the spoon are raised or beaded to give it a finished appearance, forming an inclosing border for the view of the falls

Hdle obv. The picture depicted on this spoon has been made familiar to the eyes of all by the prints and engravings that decorate the walls of thousands of homes. Priscilla stands in her simple habit, the personification of innocent beauty, purity and faith. The remainder of the handle is formed of twigs and reeds, twined about with a furling ribbon bearing the name, Priscilla.

Hdle obv. This spoon bears on the top of the handle a perfect representation of the Old Wentworth Mansion, built by Gov. Benning Wentworth in 1750, and in which was transacted most of the important business referring to New England, until the Revolution. Longfellow described the edifice as follow: “It was a pleasant mansion, an abode / Near and yet hidden from the great highroad / Sequestered among tree, a noble pile.

99-27-Durgin Sterling Souvenir spoon Reading Pennsylvania

Hdle obv. This beautiful souvenir spoon is got out in the city of Reading shows upon its handle the keystone, emblematic of the state o Pennsylvania. At the top of the spoon is one of the mountain railways, and on the bowl is represented the city seal and the industries of Reading  — coal and iron.
The spoon is attractive in outline; the curve of the upper portion of the handle forms an arch with a  keystone suggestive of the sobriquet of Pennsylvania. Below the arch, or, rather forming a view at the back of it, is a relief representation of the two mountain railway systems of Reading, the Neversink and the gravity, with the tower of the latter in the distance. Beneath this scene are the word,, “Mt. Penn and Neversink Mt. R.R.” in artistically arranged relief letters.
