Henry John Heinz (1847-1919), the founder and CEO of the H.J. Heinz CO., “originated the happy custom of giving to the parents in his employ a silver spoon, whenever the stork visits their household.” — George F. Redmont (editor) Financial Giants of America. (Boston: The Stratford Company, 1922) 291. Following the death of H.J. Heinz in 1919, this practice was continued by his son Howard Covode Heinz (1877-1941).
Emil Fuchs (1866-1929), renowned sculptor, medalist, painter and author, designed the spoon for H.J. Heinz. The spoon was manufactured and sold exclusively by Cartier. In 1921, this spoon is illustrated in a catalog titled "The Works of Emil Fuchs: Illustrating Some of his Representative Paintings, Sculpture, Medals, and Studies” and “Issued on the Occasion of an Exhibition of his works under the general Auspices of Messrs. Cartier February 7th to March 5, 1921. New York City.” In this catalog the spoon is specifically identified as a “Birthday Spoon.”
On the finial of the spoon is a miniature cast sculpture of a mother, seated on a stool and holding her child in her lap; this miniature sculpture on the spoon finial is identified in the Cartier catalog as “Mother and Child” and is based on Fuchs' bas-relief sculpture on the same subject. It should be noted that the Mother and Child on the spoon finial is in a reverse image — (on the spoon the child’s head rests on his mother’s left arm; on the bas-relief the child’s head rests on his mother’s right arm). See last picture on this page for Fuchs' sculpture.
In the bowl of this “Birthday Spoon” is a profile portrait of “H.J. Heinz” + “1844 – 1919”
Maker: = Cartier. Some of these spoons have been found (by collectors) stamped: “Patent Applied for.” No patent design has been found in the US Patent Office.
