More about this spoon. Patent No. 21,027 – (September 1, 1891) Patentee: Charles Osborne , of New York, N.Y. Assignor to the Whiting Manufacturing Company, New York N.Y. In the Patent Claim, Osborne wrote: “My design has relation to that class of goods known as ‘souvenir spoons,’ which are sold as souvenirs or mementos of certain localities, and this spoon is particularly intended to be sold in the United States, and to this end it is designed to be emblematic of the western march of empire. The leading feature of my design consists in the representation in the spoon-bowl of the sun setting behind distant hills and the representation on the handle of the head of a phenix. The spoon has the representation of the sun apparently setting behind the distant hills, produced in the bowl, and on the handle, near the head, is produced a representation of the head of a phenix surmounted by a star, the Star of the West. On the shank of the handle is produced a representation of a spray of laurel, which extends downward into the top of the spoon-bowl, where it terminates in an irregular flowery mass.”
