The Fontainebleau pattern (in sterling)was designed and patented (1880) by Antoine Heller, chief designer at Gorham Mfg. Co. The pattern was lavishly featured in the 1882 Gorham Catalog. Heller designed this pattern featuring dinner scenes from the French Court of Fontainebleau under the kingship of Francis 1. “This pattern embraced a series of delicately wrought figures in the costumes of the French court of Fontainebleau.” Source: Charles H. Carpenter, j. Gorham Silver 1831-1981. (New York: Dodd Mead & Company, 1892)1 2-13, 123-124. Gorham’s sterling Fontainebleau pattern immediately became so popular that many silver companies produced numerous silverplate “knock-off” versions of the pattern: e.g. 1847 Rogers Bos. A1. This silverplate serving spoon is a “knock-off” version of Gorham’s sterling serving spoon
