More about this spoon --
Gorham sponsored a booth at the Actors’ Fund Fair held from May 2 to 7, 1892, in New York’s old Madison Square Garden. The Actors’ Fund had been established in 1882 as a non-profit organization for the social welfare of all entertainment professionals. Over the years annual fund-raising events had been held but none was more successful than 1892’s six-day fair, which attracted more than 100,00 visitors.
The Gorham booth was filled with numerous silver objects, the pièce de résistance being a magnificent silver punch bowl, lade, and twelve punch cups which the actress Lotta Crabtree purchased for $1,200 and donated to the Actors’ Fund. But no article was sold in as large numbers as the souvenir spoons designed and executed for the Fair. Among them were Gorham’s set of fifteen sterling “Actress” spoons and Actors’ Fund Fair souvenir spoon. Prominent actresses of the day manned the booths and sale were brisk. Within the first twenty minutes more than $600 worth of souvenir spoons were sold. The fair raised more than $186, 500 for the Fund.
The Actors’ Fund Far souvenir spoon was designed by May Robson (1858-1942), an acclaimed actress for the New York Glorina Company. Panels on the handle obverse and reverse depict relief portraits of actresses and actors, living and dead, with the name of each under his or her likeness. On the obverse are portraits (female) of:
Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876)
Mary Anderson (1859-1925)
Clara Morris (1848-1925)
Agnes Ethel (1853-1903)
Lotta Crabtree (1847-1924)
The reverse presents portraits (male) of:
Edwin Forrest (1806-1872)
Edwin Booth (1833-1893
Edwin L Davenport (1815-1877)
Joseph Jeffferson (1829-1905)
William “Billy” J. Florence (1831-1891)
