888-6001.  City of Churches. Hdle obv. The subject of this historical spoon is “the old in contrast with the new.” The legend in raise letter upon the handle “Breuckelen 1667,  relates to the charter granted in 1667 to certain individuals named therein, to incorporate the village of Breuckelen. The old Brooklyn Church (in the bowl), a pioneer for the “City of Churches.” Which stood upon what is now known as Fulton Street, between Bridge and Lawrence Streets, in 1776, is an exact reproduction of that quaint old church building.
Hdle rev. The
Fulton Ferry scene of 1746 (handle reverse) is also an exact reproduction, showing the old ferry landing very near its present location at the foot of Fulton Street. And the method of crossing the East River. In contrast with the old ferry is the Brooklyn Bridge, opened to the public in 19883. The view if at an angle from the New York side, and is an excellent miniature reproduction of the bridge and river scenes. [Information Source: James Catalog].

Great excitement was building as a new attraction at Celoron Park was being erected. Opening day of the Park for the 1896 season was set for May 30. What was being erected was the 115-125-foot high (depending on what report one reads) Phoenix wheel. Manufactured in Phoenixville, Pa., this large Ferris wheel was manufactured for the Cotton States Exposition held in Atlanta, Ga., in 1895. Dismantled and loaded into box cars, the Ferris wheel was brought to Celoron Park where it stood and revolved every season from 1896 to 1951. Because of the place it was manufactured, it became known as the Phoenix wheel. See: http://www.post-journal.com/life/features/2016/04/celoron-park-s-phoenix-wheel/

You cannot have a conversation about Jackson and its’ history cannot be mentioned without the story of “Under the Oaks” being mentioned. In the mid 19th century “. . . increased resentment against slavery, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of May, 1854, threatened to make slave states out of previously free territories” (Jackson). So, on July 6, 1854 a convention of anti-slavery advocates, including Whigs and southern Democrats met in Jackson. Due to the extreme heat and discomfort coupled with the large crowd that showed up, the convention was forced “Under the Oaks”, the location is now marked with a historical marker at what is now the corner of Second and Franklin Street. What resulted at this convention was the birth of the Republican Party. The Republican Party would win by an overwhelming majority in its’ first elections of 1854 and dominated for much of the century. Immediately upon taking office the Republican Party began making an impact across the state and nation. Michigan’s first Republican Governor, Austin Blair who was a Jackson man, would the governorship in 1861 and serve during the Civil War earning the moniker “The Civil War Governor”. Today, Austin Blair is remembered and commemorated with a statue of his liking outside the Michigan State Capital. The Republican Party is also the party of arguably the greatest president in our nation’s history, President Abraham Lincoln. All of this started in Jackson under those big oak trees.  See: http://michiganhistory.leadr.msu.edu/jackson-an-introduction/jackson-under-the-oaks/
