Tunisia offers sophistication, courtesy and relaxation to its visitors. Punic and Roman elements merge in the remains of Dido's foundation at Carthage, in the splendid mosaics of the Bardo Museum and the spectacular new MusÈe de Carthage. Miles of Mediterranean coastline are dotted with Roman cities, rich repositories of religious and secular buildings, magnificent amphitheaters and theaters, town and country houses ó all reflected in the polychrome mosaics which are the glory of Tunisia. Phoenician, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine and Arab, Spanish and French lend their distinctive elements to our program as we travel through Tunis and the North, Hammamet and the Western sites, Sousse and the Sahel, the "holy city" of Kairouan, the island of Jerba, where Homer's Lotus Eaters lounged, and the traditional towns and villages of Tunisia's interior.

Tunisia, caught between the Mediterranean and the Saharan sand sea, has had to swim with both, to master the caravan routes of the Sahara and the waters of the Mediterranean. Its position beside the narrow straits of Sicily has kept it constantly at the center of the history of the Mediterranean. The country has been swept by army upon army and has learned not just to bend with, but also to adapt with, the wind. The Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Spaniards, Turks, and most recently the French, have all left their imprint, while the Phoenicians and Arabs are cornerstones of the national identity. This multicultural background has produced the most liberal of Arab nations, a crossroads between Europe and Muslim North Africa. It offers thousand-year old mosques, Roman temples, Jewish synagogues and Christian churches to explore. And when the hurly-burly's done, isolated beaches and the perfect stillness of the desert night. We welcome you to join us on this program to experience the many wonders of Dido's Africa - a magnificent country whose many treasures await your visit.
