Campanian Enterprises is expanding its tour programs to Classical sites for discriminating travelers and innovative educators. Departing June 16 and returning June 28, this tour of Sicily includes round-trip airfare from New York to Sicily, first class accommodations, breakfasts, dinners, all escorts and travel to the major classical sites in Sicily: Syracuse, Taormina, Noto, Gela, Piazza Armerina, Agrigento, Selinus, Erice, Mothia, Segesta and Palermo.

This eleven day tour is designed to introduce participants to the mythology, history, culture and religion of Greek, Roman and Norman Sicily. Following in the footsteps of 18th- and 19th-century travelers, writers, composers and artists we shall explore the diversified landscape and splendid cities of Sicily, marvel at the stunning beauty of rugged shores and at towering Mount Etna and Eryx, and savor the celebrated cuisine of the island. Sicily - located strategically off the toe of Italy in the center of the Mediterranean - offers brilliant testimony of its cultural history - Mycenaean, Punic, Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman. Sentinel to the inroads and the advance of different cultures, Sicily is a veritable Treasure Island of venturesome city planning, monumental temples and artistic masterpieces in sculpture and in mosaic.

Sicily has been traditionally associated with Persephone (a mother-goddess and daughter of Demeter) whose abduction by Hades (god of the Underworld) in the grasslands of Enna excited a mystery cult and evoked art forms of astonishing durability. This carefully designed program will offer a new "reading" of Sicilian culture highlighting fresh interpretations of mythology, new insights into the Greek and Roman experience in Sicily, recent archaeological excavations and modern museum installations. Hellenistic and Roman poetry, drama and theaters, cult and civic centers, and the Arabic-Norman phase which contributed mightily to the distinctiveness of Sicily are all ingredients of this unique program.

The Sicilian landscape - a combination of mountains and coastal plains, volcanic and serene, with shimmering grain fields and silvery olive orchards - is a masterpiece of nature and a marvelous backdrop to the myths and tumultuous history of the island. The vistas are as timeless in their beauty today as they have been inspirational to poets, composers and playwrights from ancient to modern times, from Aeschylus to Pirandello.

The goal of our tour will be to immerse ourselves in the rich world of Sicily and to enrich our lives through our experiences. Passionate travelers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome on this program.

Optional Excursion to Malta. On this program you will visit the legendary world of Calypso with whom Odysseus dallied for some years. Our visit to Malta will address the art of all ages, from the period when dwarf elephants roamed to the time when Caravaggio attempted unsuccessfully to become a Knight of Malta and painted the celebrated masterpieces available to us. From the mysterious temples of prehistoric Malta to the Maltese Falcon and the grand Palace of the Knights of Malta, Calypso's Island will delight and enchant every visitor.
